Rosa’s Kosher Pizza

rosas kosher pizzaRating (out of 5):

Best Kosher Pizza. Period.  Well, it comes in a close second to Pizza Sababa on Emek Rafaim in Jerusalem.  But as far as the USA is concerned however it is #1.

Situated on the first floor of the empire state building (easiest access is from 33rd street) you can expect to see a diverse crowd of patrons at this pizzeria at all business hours.

Their variety rivals that of non-kosher restaurants (minus the meat of course). At any given time you can also expect to see about 10 different kinds of pizzas on the table.  Today I went with two regular slices which were fresh from the oven and did not need reheating.  They were amazing!! The taste of the dough/sauce/cheese just has its own kind of flavor and doesn’t taste generic like most all other kosher pizzerias.  At $2.50 a slice its a much better deal than Jerusalem 2 also so why not eat better pizza and save money at the same time.  The fresh mozzarella slice however is the best slice they offer and it is amazing, I highly recommend going with it and a regular slice if it’s your first time there.  Get a side of ranch from the salad bar and dip your pizza in it – you won’t be let down at the awesomeness that will enter your mouth.

Some downsides of this place was that the counter guy was kind of a jerk and impatient with peoples ordering.  It also took a few minutes to pay which in the world of hot pizza every minute counts towards freshness.

Still – the pizza is amazing and you should definitely go there if you are ever in midtown!

PS. Like most kosher places, a dairy restaurant would not be complete with a sushi and salad bar tucked away in the corner and Rosas is no exception to the rule.  I have had a salmon avocado roll as well as a regular salad and they were both up to par and definitely a viable option if you do not feel like having pizza.

Betty’s Glatt Kosher Restaurant

Rating (out of 5):

All the buzz in Great Neck lately is to go try the Persian food at Betty’s.  After years of Colbeh I would have to agree with everyone that someone has to be able to make Persian food better so this time it’s Betty’s turn.

Located in Great Neck off of Middle Neck Road Betty’s is a totally new restaurant.  The decor is typical of a Persian restaurant with its Persian tapestries and paintings around the place.   We happened to go on a Tuesday night with a large crowd (approximately 20 people – it was my wedding “rehearsal” dinner).

With the size of our crowd being said, and them probably not being ready to accommodate for us (although they should be able to get it done – no excuses!)

There was a small Persian band playing, I am not sure if they have these guys regularly however the acoustics were not so good in the room which caused our ears to hurt while the played because the music was so quiet loud.  Funny though that no one asked them to turn it down.  Some of our group got up and danced around which drew stares from the other patrons but we did not mind because of the occasion.

Like most new restaurants they tend to lack in some areas (hence the negative review, see below) – especially for large crowds and Betty’s was no different in terms of service and food.

We started off with some beers which WE had to ask for.  I don’t get why kosher restaurants don’t put more emphasis on beverage purchases and be more pro-active in getting people to order them because that is where your biggest profits are in the food industry. The guy was slow to bring the drinks out and didn’t push us to get drinks like they should be doing.

We ordered combination’s (if you don’t know, a combination at a Persian restaurant usually consists of a few different types of rice, Persian salad, and a few types of kebabs) for everyone to ease the ordering process.  Although the waiters service was good they were understaffed and one side of our group would get food while the other would have to wait a few minutes till they got theirs which is not fun.  While the portions were good the kebabs were all just OK (too salty) and nothing special.  I actually think Colbeh is better and that is not saying much.

Yes, it’s a new restaurant and yes we had a large crowd and some new restaurants cannot cook to par for large groups.  But that is part of the food business and I hope they can get their act together in these areas of they plan to last, especially since they are trying to do catering as well.

Overall, I wasn’t satisfied with eating here, however I will try to make it back again (if they are still around) with a small group to see if they can do any better.

Deli Kasbah

Deli Kasbah

Rating (out of 5):

We came here for what I believe was the fourth time I have ever been this past Saturday.  Since Shabbat ends early they are open but I think that may be a mistake because while it was nice for them to be open we were the only ones in the restaurant for most of our dinner.   So – right off the bat I would recommend it as a date place if you are looking for somewhere low key.  The prices are comparable to Le Meraise and Wolf and Lamb so expect to pay $20-$40 per entrée.   The ambiance? This place likes loves The Rebbe.  They have DVDs on flat screen TVS playing 24/7 showing him as well as other posters and information about him and his works.  From what we later found out that the owner was Baal Teshuva which explains the shrine like dedication to The Rebbe.

Most of our group ended up ordering the Philly steak sandwich based off of my recommendation.  I ordered it again and was not disappointed.  The meat was very juicy and the meal was amazing.  Ask for the white sauce on the side and cover it with it!  My fiancé ordered the ribs and they were quite tasty as well.  Most of their food tends to be on the greasy side however the taste is still good.  Their menu has steaks (try the Argentinian it’s delicious), chicken, and burgers with a variety of ways they cook them.

The service was lame considering we were the only customers however this has come to be the unfortunate standard in the Kosher restaurant world… hopefully someone can prove me wrong sometime in the near future.

I would highly recommend this place if prefer a night out in the city where the conversation and your friends are more important than the crowd and plan on seeing myself there again in the future.

QUICK REVIEW! I spent all morning today in line and then watching the taping of a new Jerry Seinfeld show called “The Marriage Ref” and was in desperate need for a fast lunch.  I walked by this place many times so I figured today was the day I would try it.  First impressions were good – the young employee was extremely nice and had a big smile on his face the whole time.  Since I am trying to lose weight for a wedding I decided to go with the salad.  At $8.99 it is about normal for a kosher salad in NYC.  Unfortunately this places idea of salad was way off.  The taste was very good but it looked to be more like what the other NYC vendor carts offer in terms of food.  The salad was about 4-6 ounces of meat, rice,  and a scoop full of lettuce and pickles.  The burgers looked really good although the employee said they weren’t like normal burgers – I plan on going back to try them again.

I decided to meet up with an old friend here from my trip to Israel for dinner last night.  Since I keep fully kosher I figured it would be a good place to show off the “trendiest” kosher has to offer in Manhattan.  It’s a great place to go on a Thursday or Saturday night.. you will probably run into someone you know on a date!

Since we didn’t have a reservation they sat us at the worst table in the house – in the very front right behind the hostess.  I pleaded with the faux-hawked manager to give us a different open table but when I realized he wouldn’t budge I gave up.  That was pretty annoying because I hate sitting in a lame spot in a restaurant, I want to be in the middle of all the action.

Speaking of the workers, non of the employees seem to be Jewish.  Most of them are from some European country and one is even tattoo’d all over his body (ask him to see the tattoo on the inside of his mouth!)  They are usually quick to take orders but expect to wait a good while for your food to come out.  The larger your party the most likely some of the food doesn’t come out warm either.

The worst almost happened.  Here we were on a Saturday night, tired of eating meat for shabbat and then for lunch today and looking for somewhere dairy to go for dinner.  What is our best location option? Ugh, Cafe Muscat.  After about ten minutes I finally convince my fiance to go there.  We arrive at around 10:00pm and what a surprise – the line is out the door.  Did I forget to mention that it’s raining?  So we make a reservation “it will only take twenty minutes” and coincidentally park the car in the same spot we sat last week – and we wait.  Twenty minutes passes by and we decide to go in and see if our table is ready.  It’s not.  We float around and wait and finally decide to go down the street to Benny’s Pizza.  A place that my fiance claimed had the best kosher pizza around.  We leave and then we notice some people outside mentioning that they do not want to wait and leave themselves.  The girls jump at this opportunity and start calculating if we can get in any faster.  After hearing “they told us it would only be 20 minutes an hour ago” from some others waiting outside, I finally convince everyone to go to Benny’s.

In an effort to be more social since life seems to be moving faster than ever,  I have decided to go out more with old friends and family.  The first place I started with was last night at Cafe Muscat a Kosher Dairy restaurant in Flushing Meadows (Queens) New York.

Saturday nights at Cafe Muscat always seem like a mistake however our options for Kosher dairy are limited.  When we arrived there we weren’t surprised.  We had the choice of waiting at the door while hovering over peoples tables or just sitting in the car so we chose the ladder.  About 30 minutes later they finally had a table for us.  You should have seen the look on the other peoples faces when we walked right in and got a table!
